Cockatiel Nesting Box?

My female cockatiel laid an egg in her food bowl and I had no idea she was ready to do so. I went to a bird store and bought a nesting box and put the egg inside, but it doesn't seem as if the male bird can get inside. Nor do I even know if they know the egg is inside, what can I do to help them?
